Chapter 7

Raven rolled her head and watched Barrett’s chest pump up and down as he caught his breath after what she could only describe as the best sex of her life. Fast, hard, incredible. And also the most reckless. The evidence of her carelessness seeped out of her between her legs. She’d been so caught up in the moment, so taken by need and obsessed with finding her pleasure that using a condom had completely slipped her mind.

She and Alan hadn’t used condoms since before they got married, and there had been no one else since, so it was an easy enough mistake to make. Not that it mattered in terms of her getting pregnant, because there was no way that was happening, but what if Barrett slept with every woman he met and had some incurable disease?

“I suppose it’s a little late to ask about your medical history?” she said, brushing the hair out of her eyes, surprisingly calm for someone who might be contracting a dozen different strains of herpes right now. It was as if her subconscious already knew she had nothing to worry about.

A sated but fatigued smile pulled at the corners of his mouth, causing sharp dimples to cut into his whiskered cheeks. He lifted his hands and signed something, but from this angle, she couldn’t decipher his words.

She pushed herself to a sitting position, unable to resist combing her fingers through the hair on his chest. “I didn’t catch that.” The tips of her fingers twirled through the hair around his nipple.

She’d been right. He was hairy. His chest and stomach were covered with thick, dark hair. Not gross natty hair, but sexy hair, short and straight and asymmetrical, the hair on both sides of his chest growing toward his sternum in luscious sweeps, then down the ridges of his stomach toward the dense happy trail leading to the thatch of dark hair around the base of his ample cock, which remained hard, high, and proud, despite his orgasm.

“You have nothing to worry about. I’m clean.” He was still breathing heavily, a look of contentment on his face.

She raised one eyebrow, her heart believing him, but her brain remaining skeptical. “How do you know?”

He grinned as if he found her concerns somewhat amusing and oh-so adorable. “I just know.”

“Have you been tested?” It wasn’t lost on her that she should have thought to ask these questions before they had sex. She had no idea why she hadn’t.

“No.”

“Then how do you know you’re clean?”

“Because . . .”

“Because why?”

He lifted his head and searched her face as if he were deciding how much to tell her. A moment later, he sat up and signed, “Because I’ve never done this before.”

She frowned. “What do you mean, never done this before?”

What was he saying? That he’d never had sex? That he was a virgin?

He appeared dismayed by her question, his strong brow furrowing nervously, as if he wasn’t sure how to take her reaction. When he began signing again, his hands moved uncertainly.
